Our Mission
Recognizing Golden Valley Electric Association (GVEA)’s importance to the economic, environmental, and social viability of our communities, the Cooperative’s mission is to safely provide its member-owners with reliable electric service, quality customer service, and innovative energy solutions at fair and reasonable prices.
The cooperative operates and maintains 3,261 miles of transmission and distribution lines, 35 substations and 9 generating facilities. Our system is interconnected with Fort Wainwright, Eielson AFB, Fort Greely, the University of Alaska-Fairbanks and all electric utilities in the Alaska Railbelt, which extends from Homer, Alaska to Fairbanks. Peak load in 2018 was 196.6 megawatts (MW). The system peak of 223 MW was set in December 2007.

History
Incorporated in 1946 in Fairbanks, Alaska, Golden Valley Electric Assn. took shape when a small group of locals became interested in bringing electric service to rural areas and furthering the agricultural industry in Interior Alaska. These pioneers applied to the Rural Electrification Administration, which granted a loan to form a not-for-profit rural electric cooperative.
GVEA now serves nearly 100,000 Interior residents in Fairbanks, Delta Junction, Nenana, Healy and Cantwell. We also serve Interior residents out to 48-mile Steese Highway, 11-mile Elliot Highway (Haystack Subdivision) and 26-mile Chena Hot Springs Road.
The 9.500 kilowatts (kW) Fairbanks Exploration (F.E.) Co. power plant was built in 1927 to serve the gold dredges operating in the Tanana Valley. GVEA purchased power from the F.E. Company until 1952 when GVEA purchased the plant. It was retired in March 1972.

YOUR ROLE AS A MECHANICAs a Mechanic at Golden Valley Electric Association, you will play a key role in maintaining and repairing the fleet and utility equipment that supports GVEA's operations across Interior Alaska. Working in a hands-on shop environment, you will troubleshoot, inspect, maintain, and repair a variety of light- and heavy-duty vehicles, utility equipment, and specialized machinery to ensure safe and reliable operation.In this role, you will perform preventive and corrective maintenance, diagnose mechanical issues, and support equipment reliability while working alongside a skilled team in a safety-focused environment. You will also assist with maintaining an organized and efficient shop, ensuring equipment and tools are properly maintained and ready to support daily operations.
This position offers the opportunity to apply and expand your mechanical skills while contributing directly to the reliability and success of GVEA's operations and service to our communities.
WHAT YOU NEED TO BE SUCCESSFULTo succeed as a Mechanic at Golden Valley Electric Association, candidates should possess strong mechanical aptitude and experience in maintaining and repairing fleet vehicles, heavy equipment, or utility equipment. Successful candidates will demonstrate troubleshooting ability, attention to detail, and a commitment to safe work practices in a fast-paced environment.
The ideal candidate will be dependable, team-oriented, and able to work independently while managing multiple maintenance priorities. Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with operations and maintenance personnel are essential.
Candidates must be able to safely operate shop equipment and tools while maintaining a clean and organized work environment. A commitment to safety, reliability, and continuous improvement is critical for success in this role.
Requirements for the position are:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Vocational training in vehicle and equipment maintenance required
- Valid Alaska Class A Commercial Driver's License or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire
- Excellent driving record required; current driving record must be submitted with employment application
- Three years of experience inspecting and performing maintenance on utility and fleet vehicles
- Three years of experience in the repair and maintenance of heavy equipment
- Experience in maintenance and repair of boom and bucket trucks, requiring dielectric testing preferred
- Experience in fabrication and welding preferred
