Milwaukee Sheet Metal Workers Apprenticeship

The sheet metal trade is one of the most demanding of all the skilled trades. The majority of sheet metal workers are employed in the HVAC (Heating, Ventilating, and Air-Conditioning) industry, where they fabricate, install, and maintain HVAC systems. Many other sheet metal workers are employed in specialty areas such as kitchen equipment, sign work, metal decking and siding, heavy metal work and blowpipe, ornamental and decorative sheet metal, and architectural work such as copper work, rain protection systems, and skylights.

  1. THE TEST AUTHORIZATION SHEET
    a. You will schedule the initial aptitude test yourself. This information can be found below.
    b. You will not be allowed to take the entrance test if you do not have that sheet with you when you arrive at the testing site.

  2. THE TESTS
    ACT scores for five years from the test date. Required scores: Reading 15, and Math 16

The Next Generation test. The Next Generation test is administered by MATC, WCTC and WRTP/BIG STEP. These are not tests of your knowledge of sheet metal work. They are tests of your basic skills and aptitude. These


tests are not timed. The Next Generation tests will measure three areas:
Reading Comprehension (244), Arithmetic (250), and Quantitative Analysis & Statistics (235).


MATC. You will need to call 414-297-6233 to get walk-in testing times. The cost of the Next Generation test is $20.00, payable to MATC. You will receive your test scores immediately after taking the test. If you have not passed the required portions of the test you will need to retest in those areas, there is a waiting period of 6 months unless you show proper completion of tutoring.(see step 5 below) Retests are $5.00 per test.


WCTC website is www.wctc.edu/testing click on Accuplacer Placement Test and select a date and time. Once you select your date/time, you will select Accuplacer Testing for Apprenticeship $30.00. You will receive your test scores immediately after testing, and you will be required to bring your scores to the JATC office. If you have not passed the required portions of the test you will need to retest in those areas, there is a waiting period of 6 months unless you show proper completion of tutoring. (see step 5 below) Retests are $15.00 per test.


We strongly recommend that you take the Next Generation Sample Test available on the MATC website prior to scheduling the actual test. To take an Next Generation pre-test go to www.matc.edu, then in the search bar type out Accuplacer, then click on “How do I study for and/or schedule my Accuplacer test for MATC?”, then click on “For More information about Accuplacer and free sample questions. Next click on Practice for ACCUPLACER.



  1. TUTORING
    Individuals who wish to pursue an apprenticeship program and need assistance in meeting the necessary qualifications should contact: BIG STEP at 414-937-3600 or WCTC the Learning Place at 262-691-5318.

  2. FAILING THE TEST
    If you do not get the minimum required scores on one or more parts of the test:



A. There is a 6 month waiting period between retests unless:


a. You receive tutoring in the portions of the test that you have failed and successfully complete.



  1. You only need to retake the portions of the test you failed.



2. Retesting can only be scheduled through the Sheet Metal JATC office. You cannot schedule your own retest.


PASSING THE TEST
Applicants who pass the test will be schedule to attend an Orientation Session at which time they will be informed of the duties and responsibilities incurred in the apprenticeship program. The Orientation is mandatory to be eligible for the apprenticeship.
